The race for the PDP Chairmanship Election has intensified as Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), former Minister of Special Duties, formally submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to contest for the top position within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Turaki, a seasoned lawyer and politician, completed the submission at the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) Secretariat, located at Legacy House, Shehu Shagari Way, Maitama, Abuja, on Monday.
He was joined by a large entourage of friends, supporters, and political allies who cheered him on as he officially declared his readiness to lead the opposition party into a new era.
PDP Convention Set for November in Ibadan
The PDP National Elective Convention has been scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, where delegates from across the country will decide the party’s new leadership structure.
The chairmanship contest is expected to be one of the most competitive in recent years, as the PDP seeks to strengthen its internal unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reports from within the party indicate that Turaki may have already gained broad support from key stakeholders and regional blocs, positioning him as a potential consensus candidate. Lamido’s Camp Faces Challenges
Meanwhile, former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, who also declared interest in contesting the PDP Chairmanship Election, has reportedly encountered challenges in securing his nomination forms.
Party insiders disclosed that Lamido’s difficulties in obtaining the required documents might be linked to internal disagreements among northern PDP leaders regarding zoning arrangements and candidate endorsements. Although Lamido remains a respected figure within the party, analysts say his campaign momentum has slowed in recent days, giving Turaki a stronger upper hand in the race.

Supporters Rally Behind Turaki’s Leadership Vision
Speaking after submitting his forms, Turaki reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding the PDP into a stronger, united, and credible alternative capable of reclaiming power in the next general elections. He emphasized the importance of internal democracy, accountability, and youth inclusion in the party’s future direction.
According to Turaki, “Our great party, the PDP, has all it takes to regain the trust of Nigerians. What we need now is unity, discipline, and purposeful leadership. That is what I am offering.”
His remarks were met with applause from party members who believe his leadership style could restore the PDP’s national influence, which has waned since the 2015 transition of power.
