Former Senate President and ex-Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, has expressed confidence that flight prices on the Lagos–Ilorin and Abuja–Ilorin routes may soon drop. His optimism follows a recent conversation with Captain Edward Boyo, Chief Executive Officer of Overland Airways.
Sharing an update on his official X account, Saraki said he contacted the airline’s management to discuss the rising cost of domestic flights, which has become a pressing issue for travelers in Kwara State and across Nigeria.
According to Saraki, the discussion focused on ways Overland Airways could make tickets more affordable for passengers who depend on these routes. He noted that Captain Boyo gave assurances that the airline would review its current fare structure in the coming weeks.
Saraki wrote that he reminded the airline’s chief of their long-standing collaboration during his tenure as governor, when efforts were made to strengthen air links between Ilorin and other major cities. He added that Boyo was receptive to the concerns raised and promised to consider price adjustments soon.
The comment has drawn attention from the public, particularly among frequent travelers who have seen ticket prices on local routes nearly double in recent months. Analysts attribute the spike in fares to increased operational costs, fluctuating aviation fuel prices, and wider economic challenges.
Saraki reaffirmed his commitment to promoting accessible air travel for residents of Kwara State. He emphasized that more affordable airfares would not only ease financial pressure on travelers but also stimulate tourism, business, and regional growth.
Overland Airways is expected to issue an update on possible fare revisions soon — a move that could bring much-needed relief to passengers on the Ilorin routes and support a more balanced aviation market in Nigeria.
