Facts About UK Football Pools

The football pools is popularly known as ‘the pools’ in the United Kingdom.

Origin of UK Pools

Three friends John Moores, Colin Askham and Bill Hughes launched Littlewood Football Pool on February 1st, 1923.

Up till 1925, they were making losses from the business.

Two of them pulled out leaving only John Moores to continue.

In 1930, Moores became a millionaire through this same business.

Pact with the Football League

In July 1959, pools company in the UK signed a 10-year agreement with the English and Scottish Football Leagues to pay the latter 0.5% of stakes received (or a minimum of £245,000 per year).

This followed the ruling of the High Court of Justice which held that the copyright of fixtures belongs to the Football League.

The deal got an extension for 13 years during the 1972-73 season and it was worth £23 million.
